Fridge Tips
Did you know that there is a method of storing food in the fridge? Proper storage will help keep your foods fresher longer, safe from cross-contamination and minimize microorganism growth.
Starting with the basics, a refrigerator temperature should be set below 40° F (4° C) and checked periodically. Try not to overpack your refrigerator as this does not leave room for the cold air to circulate.
The warmest section of the refrigerator is closest to the door therefore your least perishable items such as condiments or juices should be stored there.
The top shelf is important for two reasons. It is the first section you see so you are more likely to make an impulsive decision therefore I like to store pre-cut vegetables towards the front. This shelf also has the most consistent and coldest temperature towards the back so it is best to store highly perishable foods such as milk.
Eggs, cheese or already cooked meats are best stored on the middle shelves. This section is also appropriate for grains, leftovers or other ready-to-eat foods. The vegetable drawers, also sometimes towards the middle are not only suitable for vegetables, but fruit and herbs survive best here.
If your refrigerator does not have a meat drawer, the bottom shelf is best suited for raw meats or fish. This is in case they drip, they are least likely to cross-contaminate other food items.
